چکیده

Although it has been known for many years that certain muscles of echinoderms are responsive to acetylcholine (ACh) (Bacq, 1935, i937> 1939; de Buy 1936; Iriye & Dille, 1940; Sawaya, 1951; Prosser & Judson, 1952; Ambache & Sawaya, 1953; Florey & McLennan, 1959) further studies on the pharmacology of these muscles have mostly been limited in scope. We have recently developed a preparation of the lantern retractor muscle of the echinoid Parechinus angulosus Mortensen. Such preparations may show spontaneous activity and are sensitive to stimulation by light (Boltt & Ewer, 1963). The response to light typically consists of a 'quick' contraction followed, if the duration of illumination exceeds about 8 sec, by a slower 'delayed' contraction. Very prolonged illumination releases rhythmic activity. There is also evidence that light may stimulate some type of inhibitory system in this preparation. In the hope of gaining a closer insight into its workings, we have examined the responses of the preparation to a number of different pharmacological agents. Although the results obtained do not in fact help towards a greater understanding of events, they appeared to be of sufficient interest to warrant publication.

Studies on the Myoneural Physiology of Echinodermata. Iv. the Lantern Retractor Muscle of Parechinus: Responses to Stimulation by Light.

The jaw apparatus of the regular echinoids is moved by a complex of muscles. Of these the largest and most accessible are the lantern retractor muscles which originate on the auricles and insert upon the pyramids which enclose the teeth. Preliminary experiments using Parechinus angulosus Mortensen showed that, while in this species these muscles could not be stimulated indirectly by way of elec...

Effects of calcium antagonist drugs on acetylcholine and high K responses of a molluscan muscle Neptunea antiqua.

The odontophore retractor (OR) muscle of Neptunea antiqua depends on external calcium to raise internal cellular calcium concentration of the contractile system to activation level. The acetylcholine (Ach)-and high K-induced responses were abolished in nominally Ca-free and 2 mmol/l EGTA/Ca/free salines. Diltiazem and nifedipine were inhibitory on both Ach and high K responses of the OR muscle....

New aspects of cellular adaptation in physical activity: A delayed muscle pain approach

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the context of new aspects of cellular adaptation in physical activity with a focus on delayed pain approach, the nature and types of pain, several preventive and non-pharmacological approaches to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and to achieve a desirable conclusion and provide more relevant information from previous research. In this stu...

Responses of Muscle Mitochondrial Function to Physical Activity: A Literature Review

Skeletal muscles play an active role in regulating the metabolic homeostasis through their ability for relating to adipose tissue and endocrine hormones. Contraction of the skeletal muscle leads to increased release of several myokines, such as irisin, which is able to interact with the adipose tissue. Physical activity promotes the irisin mechanism by augmenting the peroxisomes (PGC1-α) in the...

Gestational hypothyroidism-induced changes in L-type calcium channels of rat aorta smooth muscle and their impact on the responses to vasoconstrictors

Objective(s): Thyroid hormones play an essential role in fetal growth and maternal hypo-thyroidism which leads to cardiovascular deficiency in their offspring.  Considering this, we intended to investigate the impact of gestational hypothyroidism on offspring vascular contractibility and possible underlying mechanisms. Materials and Methods: Hypothyroidism was induced in female rats by administ...
